Why Black Rock?

Black Rock Grill are a small and innovative new company that specialise in fun and unusual ways of cooking and presenting food.

Primarily serving the commercial market - so their products are made for hard, daily use - they have recently launched a brand new Raclette Grill for the general public.

We believe that we are the first to feature the Black Rock Home Grill which has a 12 month guarantee and is very reasonably priced.

The super heated volcanic rock plate works much like a traditional Swiss or German raclette - just plugging into a mains socket.

Whilst the Black Rock Grill is a very new product, we have seen the commercial version in action and it worked very well. So we decided to take the plunge and feature the home version for our customers.

Why Emile Henry Flame?

Emile Henry is a family run international company dating back to 1850. It still manufactures in France, in Marcigny in Burgundy, employing 200 craftsmen. Marcigny is a small town nestling between the hills of Southern Burgundy and has been home to Emile Henry for the past 150 years. Faithful to its origins, the entire production is carried out here. It now exports to more than 50 countries, producing over 6 million pieces per year

The Emile Henry Flame range is a brand new innovation combining classic French style ceramic kitchenware and high tech innovation. It is the first ceramic casserole that can be used in direct contact with a flame. I think it is a fantastic, versatile range.

Emile Henry Flame® has a unique ceramic which can be used in the oven, microwave, dishwasher or freezer. It is amazingly strong, highly resistant to thermal shocks (-20°C -> +250°C) and mechanical shocks (ie chip resistant). The hard glaze makes it possible to put any metallic utensil inside or to cut directly on the inside with a knife without scratching. This is on top of the traditional benefits of ceramic cookware, which diffuses heat slowly and evenly.

All dishes in the range can be used on stove tops, in the oven and microwave, and can also be easily cleaned in the dishwasher.

Emile Henry is certified according to the international standard ISO 9001.

Why Gustav Emil Ern?

Gustav Emil Ern chefs knives are manufactured in Solingen, Germany. Solingen, "the City of Blades" is renowned throughout the world for the production of exceptional quality chefs and butchers knives.

The superb quality of Gustav Emil Ern knives is the result of using only the finest materials, together with a long tradition of expertise and craftsmanship. The combination of these materials and careful hardening, grinding and polishing, guarantee a superior and longer lasting cutting edge together with high corrosion resistance.

Knife designs have evolved over centuries and specific tasks require knives of different weights and design. For this reason we have listed our most popular riveted range according to whether the blade weight is heavy (fully forged) or less heavy (stamped).

The Riveted Range - Fully Forged

Forged according to traditional methods in long and carefully controlled process from one piece of high grade stainless steel, to produce a perfectly balanced knife of lasting quality and strength. The resulting knives, with their extra weight, give exceptional performance, even for the preparation of hard root vegetables, such as potatoes or parsnips, and are also ideally suited to precise tasks such as fine carving, filleting and slicing.

The Riveted Range - Stamped

Of lighter weight but of equal quality to forged knives. The steel is hot rolled into wedge shaped strips and then the knife is "stamped out" under enormous pressure. The knives then undergo the same processes as the forged range, creating knives which have the same properties but do not require the extra weight of the forged range, such as serrated carving, boning, palette and turning knives.

The Moulded Range

High grade, moulded "Profilon®" handles surround blades of identical quality to the Riveted ranges. "Profilon®" handles can be sterilised making them especially hygienic. In addition the non-slip property of the handles makes them particularly safe when used with wet hands.

Knife Storage and Sets

Gustav Emil Ern knives are a major investment for any chef and, as the tools of his trade, they should be well cared for to maintain their excellent cutting properties and prolong their life. We offer a range of storage possibilities to secure, protect and display knives - from attractive, lockable magnetic brief cases to the ABS knife rack which allows for fourteen items to be stored safely in a minimum of wall space.

  • Each mechanism is designed for its specific task - so as to do each job better
  • A genuine unlimited lifetime guarantee on all mechanisms

  • Huge range of different designs and styles from the traditional to the ultra modern

"Ever since I started my career as a chef I have used PEUGEOT mills. New technologies have come and gone but after 160 years of expertise, original PEUGEOT mechanisms are still the best"

Novelli Academy, jeanchristophenovelli .com

In 1810 the PEUGEOT brothers began producing rolled steel in their mill. They started making kitchen mills in 1840 but have produced a whole array of famous specially designed goods including the cars and bicycles we know well. They continue to innovate without losing their traditional quality and proven technologies.

The PEUGEOT pepper mill stainless steel mechanism is specifically designed to mill whole peppercorns. All the mills are adjustable, with the U select mechanism ( see below ) offering pre-set grind settings. The unique PEUGEOT grinding mechanism has a helix-shaped double row of teeth that cracks the corns in half before then grinding them finely. The mechanism has a patented treatment to protect it from corrosion whilst retaining its milling sharpness

The standard PEUGEOT salt mill mechanism is designed to grind dry rock salt crystals. A recommended brand is Tidman's rock salt which you can buy from Sainsbury, Tesco or Waitrose. Again, the salt mechanism is stainless steel and treated to protect against corrosion.

A "wet" sea salt grinder is also available for grey sea salt or sel de guerande (Malden sea salt would fall under this category ). For more details see our Vendôme Wet Sea Salt Grinder

The U select mechanism is PEUGEOT's latest innovation and allows you to choose from 6 pre-set levels on the pepper mills and 3 on the salt mills. It means that finding your preferred fineness or coarseness of grind is not left to guesswork as you adjust

Why Soho Spices?

Soho Spices Magnetic Spice Racks and Spice Jar Shakers are a great storage idea, and are well-engineered with a quality finish. They have proved to be one of our best selling items and we heartily recommend them. Forget the cheap imitations that you find in some shops - they just don't last like the originals!

The main features of the design are:

  • Clean, linear design
  • Highly efficient use of space
  • Very attractive, contemporary decor affect
  • Patented twist and shake design to give good quantity control
  • Lid seal that keeps herbs and spices fresh
  • Made from high quality materials
  • 1 year guarantee

First created in New York in 2001, the Spice Racks and Spice Jars have proved so popular that they are now available all over North America and in Europe, Australia, Japan and New Zealand. New inventions coming soon!

As the designer behind their worldwide success, Laura Martin (with an Italian mother, Ukrainian father, Indian husband and growing up in French Canada) admits her designs are very much shaped by a fascination of different cultures.

In Mumbai to have a Hindu wedding ceremony Laura had the chance to visit many relatives and was fascinated to see their kitchens and cooking tools. Inspired by 'vatis', the stainless steel pot of choice to store Indian spices, grains and lentils, Laura bought every conceivable size of vatis at the local markets to bring back to New York. The design challenge was to make a suitably stylish way to store all of them in her tiny NY kitchen. Needless to say the only space available was wall space. After several magnetic prototypes and finalising high grade stainless steel manufacturers, the first Soho Spices product was born.

The result has been a design that is practical, easy to use and also enhances the decor of any space. Made of high grade 18/8 stainless steel, the original magnetic spice storage solution with airtight seals are the only choice for discerning chefs wanting to protect the potency and flavour of quality spices. A functional design that shows off the array of colours and textures - adding to kitchen design, rather than adding to worktop clutter.

Why Swiss Diamond?

Swiss Diamond produce pots and pans made with real diamonds! Swiss Diamond have harnessed their unique physical properties to come up with a new non-stick coating, which even scooped a Gold medal at the Geneva Inventors Fair.

Lifetime warranty

The secret behind the brilliance of Swiss Diamond is the unique physical properties of diamonds that provide the non-stick cooking surface with dazzling benefits not found in any other cookware. Not only are diamonds the hardest natural substance but they also possess the highest thermal conductivity, four times that of copper. Numerous other special properties have seen diamond used in industrial, medical and scientific applications. Now Swiss Diamond have found a way to take advantage of this impressive material in non-stick coating.

The non-stick surface is far more cut, chip and abrasion resistant than anything else out there. The secret is combining industrial diamond crystals with a non-stick composite to create a virtually indestructible cooking surface.

This composite gets fused to the pan, rather then layered on, as with most other non-stick surfaces. Swiss Diamond invented this technology and is the only one in existence who uses it.

But it is not just the non-stick coating which makes these pans so special.

  • The reinforced pan edges offer a high level of shock resistance.
  • The comfortable stay-cool handles are engineered for good balance, have finger and thumb grips and are heat resistant in the oven up to 450°F.
  • Cast brass threaded inserts ensure the handles are firmly attached.
  • The interior pan colour is a steel grey rather than the more traditional black, which allows better visibility of what's going on in the pan such as when caramelising pan juices.

Swiss Diamond non stick has no harmful compounds. Swiss Diamond has a nano-composite extra thick layer of traditional PTFE non-stick (as used by Teflon) AND diamond crystals which they claim is 25% better than titanium at giving a lifetime of smooth non-stick surface. The quantity of PTFE used is small compared to other non stick pans and Swiss Diamond confirm that the harmful PFOA component in the PTFE is NOT present in the pans. This has been confirmed by the Danish Technology Institute.

Why Wesco?

Wesco Bins are in our view, the best waste bins on the market today.

When researching for this site, we asked other bin suppliers whether their products matched the Wesco quality and no one felt able to say that their waste bins were as good.

We got tired of bins that broke - even those with a hefty price tag. So, whilst we agree that these bins are expensive, we think they are well worth the investment.

Made in Germany, with all that excellent engineering and design tradition behind it, the Wesco bin is in classic vintage or retro style.

Westemann & Co first started trading in 1867 and has well over 100 years of experience in metal manufacturing.

All time best selling ranges such as the Pushboy, Kickmaster and the Kickboy have been extended to include popular lines such as the Baseboy and more recently the new Wasteman and TowerKick ranges.

We offer you the full Wesco bin range, and at what we believe is the best online retail price

Why Zassenhaus?

Zassenhaus of Germany have been manufacturing high quality mills for over 100 years. They began in 1867, and first produced their famous coffee grinders 20 years later. The first pepper mills were produced in 1904. In 2000 they invented the first continuously adjustable grinding mechanism made with high quality ceramic.

Each mill has a patented mechanism, harder than steel, completely wear-proof and corrosion free. The mills are adjustable with 6 different settings from rough to fine grind to suit the user's requirements.

Unusually for a ceramic grinder, the mechanisms are each uniquely suited to the type of condiment - pepper, salt spices and dry herbs. So no jack of all trades here!

Zassenhaus pepper mills and salt mills have just recently been made available in the UK. Although I cannot at this stage say what is the experience of my customers with them, as they are so new, Zassenhaus has an excellent reputation. Having a ceramic grinder that is suited to the condiment also bodes well for the effectiveness of the millls.

25 year guarantee - we normally only stock mills with a lifetime guaranteed. It is, however, Zassenhaus' policy to offer a 25 year guarantee. I do not think that this reflects a lower quality product, just a company policy. I have said that they should make it a lifetime one if they want to be known amongst the best grinders on the market, which I believe they do! So, fingers crossed they will listen!!
